Measuring guide

How to measure
your wall.

Accurate measurements mean the right number of rolls, less waste and a perfect result. Here is how to measure for every wall type.

WIDTH HEIGHT +2-4 in. margin

Standard wall

Measure the width and height of your wall. Add 2 to 4 inches to both dimensions as a cutting margin. This extra material is trimmed away during installation.

TALLEST WIDEST

Sloped wall

Measure at the highest point for the height and the widest point for the width. Order based on these maximum dimensions; the excess is trimmed to follow the slope.

LONGEST LONGEST

Multi-sloped wall

For walls with multiple angles, measure the longest horizontal and vertical spans. This ensures your wallpaper panels are large enough to cover every part of the wall.

DOOR WIN FULL WIDTH FULL HEIGHT

Walls with doors or windows

Measure the full wall dimensions including doors and windows. Do not subtract openings from your measurement; cut around them during installation for a clean, continuous finish.

WALL 1 WALL 2 + COMBINED WIDTH

Multiple walls

Add the widths of all walls together to get the total width. Use the height of the tallest wall. This lets you order all the wallpaper you need in a single calculation.

HIGHEST LOWEST WIDTH

Staircases

Measure the wall width and take two heights: the highest point and the lowest point. Use the highest measurement when ordering so every panel has enough material.

How to install
your wallpaper.

All Wallpaper Depot papers use the paste-the-wall method. No soaking, no pasting table. Here is the complete process from start to finish.

Preparation

1

Prepare the surface

Make sure the wall is smooth, clean and dry. Remove old wallpaper, fill any holes or cracks, and sand down rough areas. A properly prepared wall is the foundation of a professional finish.
2

Mix the wallpaper paste

Use a high-quality paste suitable for paste-the-wall application. Mix according to the manufacturer's instructions until smooth and lump-free. Allow it to rest for the recommended time before use.

Hanging

3

Check your panels are complete and in order

Lay out all panels and verify the print quality, quantity and sequence before you begin. Confirm that colors are consistent across rolls. Do not proceed if anything looks incorrect.
4

Mark a vertical line with a spirit level

Use a spirit level and pencil to draw a true vertical line where your first panel will go. This reference line ensures the first panel is perfectly straight, which keeps every subsequent panel aligned.
5

Apply paste to the wall, not the paper

Roll an even coat of paste directly onto the wall, covering an area slightly wider than one panel. Paste-the-wall application means the paper stays dry and is easier to handle and position.
6

Hang panels edge to edge

Align each panel to the previous one, butting edges together without overlapping. Match the pattern carefully at the seam. Work from the top of the wall downward, leaving a few inches of excess at the top and bottom.
7

Smooth from center outward

Use a wallpaper brush or smoothing tool to press the paper flat, working from the center of the panel toward the edges. This pushes out air bubbles and ensures even adhesion across the entire surface.
8

Trim excess with a sharp knife

Once the panel is positioned and smooth, use a sharp utility knife and a trim guide to cut away the excess material at the ceiling, baseboard, and around any doors, windows or outlets.

Pro tips

Before you start

Allow drying time

Let the wallpaper dry undisturbed for at least 24 hours. Avoid opening windows or using fans in the room during this period. Controlled drying prevents seams from lifting.

Clean paste immediately

Wipe any paste from the wallpaper surface right away using a clean, damp cloth. Dried paste can leave marks that are difficult or impossible to remove later.

Small bubbles disappear

Do not worry about tiny air bubbles that appear during installation. They will flatten and vanish as the paste dries and the wallpaper contracts against the wall.
